Abstract

The three short papers to follow describe wetland reclamation operations undertaken in the Byelorussian SSR (USSR) in the last few decades and some of their ecological consequences. The Byelorussian wetlands partly belong to a large wetland complex situated in the Polessye region which also encompasses the northern Ukraine and extends along the main European water divide, between the basins of the Black and the Baltic Sea. The river Pripyat, the largest tributary of the Dnieper river from the west, is the hydrological axis of the Polessye and receives most of its water discharge.
