Large Transition Metal Clusters — Bridges between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysts?

Aspects of Homogeneous Catalysis

Part of the book series: Aspects of Homogeneous Catalysis ((AHCA,volume 7))

Abstract

Clusters: We interpret clusters as an accumulation of interacting atoms, here of metal atoms. The number of atoms forming a cluster is not clearly defined. Normally one speaks of clusters having an ensemble of at least three atoms. But where is the transition from small to large clusters? For this article, large clusters will be defined as metal particles beginning with 25 atoms. Clusters change continously into colloidal metals. Therefore this transition cannot be defined sharply as well. Generally, particles with a diameter larger than ~ 100 Å are regarded as colloids. These again turn continously to small crystallites, as they are often used in heterogeneous catalysis.
