Abstract

The agropine synthase gene (ags) is a kind of opine synthase genes found in T-DNA regions of Ti and Ri plasmids. Opine synthase genes and oncogenic (onc) genes are important for genetic colonization of host plants by Agrobacteria (1). Historically these genes were assumed to be constitutive in plants and the 5’ control region of the octopine synthase gene (ocs), the nopaline synthase gene (nos) and the 1’ and 2’ genes in Tr-DNA of the Ti plasmid for mannopine synthesis have been widely used as promoters for foreign genes in plants. However, it was recently found that the Tr-DNA 1’2’ dual promoter and the Tl-DNA gene 5 promoter are influenced by phytohormone levels (1, 2). Furthermore a recent study of the nos promoter revealed that it’s expression is organ-specific and developmentally regulated in transgenic tobacco plants (3).
