Abstract

Coffee is playing a major role in the economy of many African, American and Asian countries. There are many species of coffee, but only two are important commercially, Coffea canephora and C. arabica, which are responsible for the total world production. Coffea originates from Africa. Plants have a vegetative dimorphism, with plagiotropic and orthotropic branches. Under natural conditions no reversal from plagiotropic to orthotropic occurs, and it is exceptional under in vitro conditions (Dublin, 1984b; Pochet, 1979). Cutting propagation from plagiotropic shoots results in shrubs with no agronomic value. Therefore orthotropic buds are indispensable for vegetative propagation to produce normal bearing trees. Flower development in coffee is peculiar: the bud passes a rest period called “floral rest”, which is alleviated by rain. As a consequence flowering in coffee is discontinuous and many bursts of “flowering-explosions” contribute to the yield of a particular year.
