Abstract
Asia is principally occupied by agriculture and forestry land. Arable and permanent cropland in 1981–1983 was estimated about 450 million ha, whereas forest and woodland at 600 million ha, of which at least 1.8 million ha per annum were deforested between 1981 and 1985 (World Resources, 1986). Reforestation has been implemented, but only about 5.6 million ha were planted in the 1980s.
