Abstract

One way of approaching Frege’s theses about language is to view them as constituting a theory about what it is for words to have a meaning or to mean something. Another way of so doing is to view them as a set of conditions language must satisfy if it is to discharge its function as a language of science. The first approach is the one usually adopted. The second approach is the one we shall adopt in this paper. We shall, thus, be bringing to the fore an aspect of Frege’s philosophy which is usually neglected. We shall restrict our detailed attention to Frege’s theory of Bedeutung (reference),1 commenting on other parts of his theory of meaning only in the most general way.
