Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Sedimentation in Central Noord-Holland (The Netherlands) Around 5000 BP: A Case Study of Changes in Sedimentation Dynamics and Sediment Distribution Patterns

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Hydrobiology ((DIHY,volume 57))

Abstract

The coastal development of the central part of the present province of Noord-Holland during the Atlantic and Subboreal led to a change in sedimentary environments, which ranged from lagoonal, via a tidal-flat-like depositional system, to a coast where prograding barriers predominated. The sedimentation pattern in the coastal plain is determined not only by rising of the sea-level but also by the pre-existing relief, the supply of sediments, and the hydrodynamic setting. The marked transition from an open (with W-E-running tidal channels) to a closed (by barriers) coast at the end of the Atlantic is discussed.
