Abstract

When measuring the energy loss as a function of the exit angle for swift light ions traversing a thin film, a minimum around the beam direction can be observed (1–4). It indicates that less scattered ions lose, in average, less energy than those ejected at much greater angles. Effects like these are well known to be also caused by the presence of pin-holes in the foil. However they can be easily identified by looking at the energy loss spectra, where pin-holes produce a sharp peak close to the beam energy and well separated from the scattered particles.
