Medical Anthropology and the Comparative Study of Medical Ethics

Social Science Perspectives on Medical Ethics

Part of the book series: Culture, Illness, and Healing ((CIHE,volume 16))

Abstract

Medical anthropology has emerged relatively recently as a recognized field of study. Its development in the past few decades has been rapid and comprehensive. If we exclude significant work in the field by physical anthropologists — in such areas as paleopathology, forensic medicine, health aspects of population genetics, the scope of research in medical anthropology by cultural anthropologists is formidable. Among the topics that could be cited are the studies of a wide variety of medical systems which examine nosologies, etiologies, modes of diagnosis and therapy, characteristics of medical personnel, practitioner-patient relationships, and assessments of efficacy; medical pluralism; illness and health-seeking behaviors; social and cultural aspects of epidemiology; anthropological studies of nutrition, demography and obstetrics; cultural psychiatry; alcoholism and drug abuse; applied anthropology in public health programs and clinical settings; and economic and political dimensions of health problems and health care.
