Abstract
The use of gas bearings is usually restricted to special conditions which are environmental, like severe temperatures, or might be related with high-speed applications requiring very low friction. Instability occurance is in certain cases similar to liquid bearings but have particularities concerning these bearings like the “pneumatic hammer” in externally pressurised bearings. Design principles and vibration analysis are presented.
