Abstract
Firstly, it is suggested that serotonin is released during wakefulness, which in turn secondarily leads to the induction of slow wave sleep and paradoxical sleep. Jouvet postulates hypnogenic structures which are activated by indolaminergic mechanisms. Secondly, we suggest that the 5-HT2 receptors are playing an active role in the regulation of deep slow wave sleep.
