Abstract
Technical advances in recent years have opened up a variety of possibilities for investigating physiological and biochemical mechanisms on isolated in vitro systems of cultured cells or cell components, such as enzymes, receptors, second messenger systems and carrier molecules involved in transport across cell membranes. Such studies are carried out at an increasing level of sophistication, utilizing the most recent advances in biotechnology. Some of these procedures compete favorably with traditional in vivo techniques, using animals, in terms of cost as well as time. Needless to say, they are especially welcome from the ethical point of view, since they reduce the number of experiments that have to be performed on the whole animal.
