Abstract
Acidic soils overlying extensive, base poor bedrock characterise a large part of the Welsh and Scottish uplands, with the consequence that these areas are both acidic and acid sensitive. Stream acidification, with associated loss of fisheries, is being observed on a large scale throughout these areas.3,11,12,14,15,36 High inorganic aluminium concentrations (Al3+, Al(OH)2+ etc.) are toxic to fish.12,22,29 Thus the fish losses are associated with waters that are not only acidic but which have anomalously high inorganic aluminium concentrations compared with most natural waters. Acidic deposition and conifer afforestation have both been implicated in the decline in water quality and fisheries status for Welsh and Scottish headwater streams. The relative importance of these two factors is not easily quantified 24,25,31,32 although predictive models are being developed to overcome this shortfall.6,7,8,38,39
