Abstract
Natural immigrations, invasions linked to the influence of man and some consequences of these range shifts are examined within rodents of the family Muridae. The Neogene and Pleistocene history of faunas from the periphery of the Mediterranean Sea as shown by murids makes clear the role of paleogeography and climate in determining immigrations. A few species of rats and mice show spectacular invasions under the influence of man. Various aspects of invasions (morphological change, genetic variability, ecological amplitude) are discussed. A short review of the plague shows how the commensal rat is involved in the human cycle of the disease.
