Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa must be regarded as a highly successful organism: not only does it compete so effectively in a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, it is also a commensal of animals, including man, and plants (Sokatch, 1986). In addition, of course, it is a troublesome opportunistic pathogen, notably causing non-mucoid surface infections in burns and cancer patients, and mucoid infections of the urinary and respiratory tracts.
