Abstract

Powerful extragalactic radio sources are unique laboratories for studying the highest energy phenomena. Because they usually emit intense optical line emission, their redshifts can be measured out to extreme distances, corresponding to >10 percent of the age of the present Universe. It is now almost 50 years since the optical identification of Cygnus A, overnight, made radio astronomy into one of the most powerful tools for studying the distant Universe and turned it into a respectable branch of science. The Westerbork Telescope (WSRT) has been around for about half that time.
