Abstract

As a theoretician, I am not familiar with all technical aspects of observing pulsars. I will therefore not attempt a technical discussion of the precise capabilities in this field of a Square Kilometer Array Interferometer as proposed by Braun (this volume). In principle this telescope may, as will be outlined in section 2, lead to an increase in the known number of pulsars by one to two orders of magnitude. I will in this paper mainly concentrate on the breakthroughs in our knowledge of neutron stars, their formation and evolution, that may be expected from such an increase, and on what consequences this may have for associated fields, ranging from planet formation to the detection of gravitational waves. Section 3 deals with the area where we expect the most interesting new results: binary and millisecond pulsars and pulsars with planets.
