Abstract
The end of the Soviet era and the breakup of the Soviet Union into 15 independent states, along with the accidental release of radionuclides into the atmosphere at Chernobyl in Ukraine in 1986, resulted in the disclosure of vast regions in the newly independent states (NIS) affected by radioactive and chemical contamination.*
