National Accounts and the Environment

Abstract

At the beginning of 1990, in the research agenda of the Italian National Statistical Institute (ISTAT) a new area of research began to take shape within the unit of environmental statistics. This research was centered around the development of statistical information on the relationship between the economy and the environment. To this end, ISTAT’s Center for Environmental Statistics drew up a project outline for the creation of an integrated system of environmental accounting and prepared an operational programme for the implementation of this project in the period 1990–1993 (Costantino, 1990).
