Chronopharmacological aspects of coronary heart disease

  • Chapter
Triggering of Acute Coronary Syndromes

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 170))

Abstract

Circadian rhythms in the functions of the cardiovascular system are now well established as indicated in the preceeding chapters and other publications [1,2]. Biological rhythms in heart rate and blood pressure were already described at the end of the 18th and during the 19th century by Zimmermann, 1793, Falconer, 1797, Autenrieth, 1801, Knox, 1815, Wilhelm, 1809, Zadek, 1881 and others [2]. There are also very early reports of the occurrence of nocturnal symptoms and/or onset of angina pectoris attacks and myocardial infarction [3,4].
