Abstract

Immunoassays are extensively used in clinical and biochemical applications for quantitative detection of compounds of diagnostic significance [1–3]. The analytical utility of immunoassays is based on the extraordinary specificity and remarkably high affinity of antibody-antigen reactions. This unique characteristic of antibody-antigen binding allows the selective quantitation of an analyte at trace amounts in the presence of contaminants at much higher concentrations which would almost certainly interfere using other analytical methods. Such assays have been applied to various areas of clinical diagnosis such as endocrinology, oncology, autoimmune diseases, therapeutic drug monitoring, infectious diseases and forensic drug testing. More recently, immunoassays have been developed for environmental, food and agricultural applications such as detection of pesticide residues, food toxins and environmental carcinogens [4].
