Abstract
This is an era of multidisciplinary science. One of the fastest growing young areas is ecotoxicology, which has developed mainly within the last quarter of a century by a synergy of classical toxicology and environmental chemistry. However, there are other traditions which can contribute insights to the ecotoxicologist’s aims of understanding, predicting and managing the impacts of harmful chemicals on the environment. Not least, ecology should influence thinking within the subject, if it is to live up to its name.
