Evolution of a near-neutral B chromosome

  • Chapter
Chromosomes Today

Abstract

Among the constellation of selfish genetic elements, including transposons, segregation distorters and some cytoplasmic factors, which make up eukaryote genomes, B chromosomes are in fact the earliest example to be widely studied (Jones, 1985; Shaw and Hewitt, 1990). The term B chromosome was first used by Randolph (1928) in maize and more than 1300 plant and nearly 500 animal species have since been reported to carry them (Jones and Puertas, 1993).
