Abstract
This chapter describes the statistical analysis of series of trials aimed at predicting the future performance of new varieties in a specified region or country (a recommendation domain in the terminology of Chapter 8). The methods have been developed to meet the requirements of official variety testing in the UK (Patterson and Silvey, 1980) and are based on principles established by Fisher (1935) and Yates and Cochran (1938). Varieties entering the trials are distinct entities that have passed through the breeding stage and are now ready for marketing.
