Measurements and interpretation of cytoplasmic ion activities

  • Chapter
Epithelial Transport

Abstract

Understanding the mechanisms of ion transport across epithelial barriers requires knowledge of intracellular ion activities. Ion transport across cell membranes is mediated by carriers, channels or pumps, and the ion fluxes mediated by these transport proteins depend on ion activities and/or electrical potential. Studies of ion transport mechanisms in epithelial cells are complex because of the differences in transport properties of the apical and basolateral membranes, i.e. the transporters expressed at the two membrane domains are different.
