Ionomers

Abstract

There are three prime functions of packaging: containerization, protection, and merchandizing. Ionomers have been found to offer unique advantages in all these areas. While in the years following the introduction of ionomers, such applications as golf-ball covers, ski boots and other molding applications were perhaps the most spectacular uses, in recent years by far the greatest volume of product has been used in flexible packaging applications. At the outset, virtually the only source of ionomers for these applications is the range of ‘Surlyn’ resins manufactured by E.I. du Pont de Nemours. These are ionomers made from ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymers (E/MAA) in which the acid content varies within the range of 2–6 mol%. The neutralization is achieved with sodium or zinc.
