Abstract

The behaviour of mixtures of more than one phase is important in many areas of process engineering, particularly where particulate material is transported by a fluid, in reaction engineering or where energy or mass transfer occurs across phase boundaries:

Compared with single phase systems, multi-phase systems present inherent experimental and theoretical difficulties, for example in the need to characterise particle shapes, describe size distributions and their evolution, treat surface layer effects including contamination, consider various regimes of motion, and deal with a host of secondary factors such as Brownian motion and electrostatic charges.
