Abstract

Solvents are some of the most widely used and important chemicals, accounting for world-wide sales of almost $US3 billion in 1992 [1]. Since the industrial revolution thousands of different solvents have been synthesized by the chemical industry. Their widespread use as cleaning and drying agents and as reaction media is related to their ability to dissolve and transport solids and other liquids. The role of solvents in the fine chemical industry has been dominated by their use as a reaction medium. They influence many aspects of reactions and other processes through physical and chemical interactions with solutes.
