Abstract
The grey partridge Perdix perdix was originally a bird of the temperate steppe grasslands of central Europe and Asia. It adapted readily to an open arable landscape and vastly expanded its range as agricultural development spread westward across Europe over the last eight millennia. At its maximum extent, this species occurred throughout Europe and north-west Asia east to Mongolia. The range was further extended by successful introductions into North America at the beginning of the twentieth century; it is now established in the northern half of the United States and in south-west Canada.
