Abstract

Modern Norwegian fisheries research originated in Bergen in 1900. Johan Hjort was the leader of both the scientific investigations and the fisheries administration and management (Fig. 20.1). He came from an old civil service family and was an active, liberal politician. This pioneer period of Norwegian marine research was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War.
