Compensatory responses to decreased young-of-the-year survival: an individual-based modelling analysis of winter flounder

Early Life History and Recruitment in Fish Populations

Part of the book series: Chapman & Hall Fish and Fisheries Series ((FIFI,volume 21))

Abstract

Marine fish populations typically show wide annual variation in their numbers. Much of this variability may be attributed to density-independent and density-dependent factors that affect recruitment (Sissenwine, 1984; Rothschild, 1986; Fogarty et al., 1991; Rose et al., 1993; Houde, 1994). Recruitment (the number of fish entering the adult population) is believed to be determined in the first year of life for many fishes (Rothschild, 1986; Sale, 1990). Because of this, growth and mortality through young-of-the-year (YOY) stages often have a large influence on recruitment success (Rose et al., 1993) and, thereby, on the long-term dynamics of fish populations.
