Drought Stress Applied During the Reproductive Phase Reduced Ozone-Induced Effects in Bush Bean

  • Chapter

Abstract

Plant response to O3 is influenced by environmental conditions and the stage of plant development. Drought stress is a major factor affecting plant yield and modifies plant response to O3. Soil moisture stress, especially during the critical periods of flowering and early pod set, reduces yield in legumes (Dubetz and Mahalle, 1969; Maurer et al., 1969; Sionit and Kramer, 1977). Photosynthate allocation to reproductive organs is not substantial until pod initiation (Fischer and Turner, 1978), thus plant stress during reproductive development can suppress yield. Similarly, plant exposure to O3 during reproductive development reduces yield. Kohut and Laurence (1983) reported that O3 exposure during the pod-filling period reduced kidney bean yield. Reductions in yield were also reported in soybean exposed to enhanced O3 concentrations during flowering and pod filling (Kohut et al., 1986).
