Abstract
Assessment of reduced productivity of agricultural and forested ecosystems due to insects, diseases, weather, and other elements of the environment has been the subject of research for over 100 years, but only recently have quantitative methods been applied to the problem (Teng, 1987a). Part of the problem in recognizing and quantifying losses in agriculture and forestry is that plant improvement and the advent and application of inorganic fertilizers have contributed such gains to productivity that many previously severe constraints to production have become of minor importance. Could anyone demonstrate a deleterious effect of degraded air quality on gross production of maize or soybeans over the last 40 years?
