Abstract
Preferential polymer formation in polymerisation of copper(I) 4-bromo-thiophenoxides has been used to advantage to prepare novel ABA block copolymers of poly(1,4-phenylene sulphide)(A) and poly(2-methyl-1,4-phenylene sulphide)(B) from bis-(4-bromophenyl)sulphone by sequential reaction with copper (I) 4-bromo-2-methylthiophenoxide and copper (I) 4-bromothiophenoxide. The materials produced have been characterised by IR/NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, hot-stage microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The preparation and properties of the block copolymers are compared to those of the homopolymers and random copolymers comprising 1,4-phenylene sulphide and 2-methyl-1,4-phenylene sulphide repeat units.
