Acoustic Emission Testing of Coatings

  • Chapter
Surface Coatings—2

Abstract

A component’s performance in service may often be improved by isolating the main structural material from the environment by use of a protective coating. The coating is generally present to prevent chemical reactions with the environment, but in some cases other characteristics, such as the wear behaviour or the thermal properties, are paramount. The protective coating may also enhance the aesthetic qualities of the component For simplicity, coatings may be considered under two major groupings, namely the organic coatings and the inorganic coatings. Organic coatings, most of which are known as paints, are generally composed of pigments dispersed in organic binders. The pigments are present to increase the hiding properties, to obtain different colours and sometimes to improve corrosion resistance. The most widely encountered surface coatings in the second grouping are electrodeposited and hot-dipped metallic systems and thermally sprayed coatings, but also included are the more unusual coatings, e.g. diffusion coatings and those produced by laser treatments.
