Summary

The factors affecting the choice of materials for large discs in highly rated land-based gas turbines are reviewed. It is concluded that NIMONIC alloy 901, a Ni-Fe-Cr base alloy, is suitable to replace the traditional steels. Problems in producing large discs in this type of alloy are discussed and the production route used to produce a 1 metre diameter disc described. The structure and mechanical properties of this disc demonstrate the practicability of producing large NIMONIC alloy 901 discs without detrimental effects compared to the well documented behaviour of much smaller aero-engine forgings. The higher temperature and strength capability of such large discs allows increased efficiency and economy in land-based gas turbines.
