Permanganic Etching and Its Insights Into Crystalline Polymers

  • Chapter
Developments in Crystalline Polymers

Abstract

The macroscopic properties of crystalline polymers are controlled in large measure by their physical microstructure. Permanganic etching allows systematic study of real microstructures. It is a spectrum of techniques whereby potassium permanganate dissolved in strong acids reveals lamellar arrangements and structural details for an increasing range of crystalline polymers. With this method, one can now examine representative interior lamellar organizations of most, if not all, commercially important crystalline polymers at high resolution with the electron microscope. Diffraction studies are also possible. This chapter begins with an explanation of the importance of microstructure and the use of permanganic etching in relation to other morphological techniques. The wide potential of the method is illustrated with examples of achievements in particular cases. Analysis of specimens can be deepened, giving more precise and quantitative conclusions, if textural differences are amplified by controlled annealing and recrystallization treatments. In these ways, permanganic etching coupled with a complementary morphological approach, provides a powerful and unprecedented means of identifying and quantifying the lamellar textures underlying the properties of crystalline polymers.
