Abstract
Previous chapters have shown that women with an increased susceptibility to breast cancer can be recognised by certain characteristics in their life history which may indicate factors capable of promoting or stimulating breast cancer growth. Measures taken to avoid or counteract these factors in a susceptible woman may arrest progression to frank cancer and lead to dormancy in the growth. This may enable her to live out her natural span of life before the cancer can manifest clinically, and in this sense is equivalent to prevention of the disease.
