Summary
Nine patients with malignant choroidal melanomas treated with radioactive Iodine 125 have been followed up since 1984 with the B-scan and the standardized A-scan procedures. Within the first month after beginning of treatment the echograms showed differences among the tumours in prominence, structure and inner reflectivity.
In contrast to this all tumours showed an increase in vascularisation. This became particularly clear with video-echography.
Later on an increase of reflectivity and an inhomogeneity of the inner structure were predominant, as is the case with other radiation procedures. Tumour prominence decreased in all patients.
Our impression is that the echographically determined degree to which vascularisation increases after irradiation is an indicator of the therapy’s effectiveness.
