Abstract
Recurrences are one of the most common and important features of this disease, and make it different from most other diseases of infectious etiology. Before anti-streptococcal prophylaxis, 75% of rheumatic fever patients had one or more recurrent attacks during their lifetime, a major cause of the morbidity and mortality from this disease1. In countries where programs to prevent recurrences have been established, there has been a marked improvement in the natural history and prognosis of rheumatic fever. The methods available to prevent recurrences are discussed in Chapter 12.
