Exploitation And Migration of Salmon on the High Seas, In Relation to Greenland

  • Chapter
Atlantic Salmon

Abstract

The presence of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) off West Greenland was first mentioned by Fabricius (1780), who, however did not see any himself. He recorded it as rare, in two localities in the district of Qaqortoq and in a bay near Nuuk (Figure 24.1). The latter bay is probably Kapisillit. The Kapisillit river is the only river in Greenland where salmon spawn annually. From time to time salmon have been observed in other rivers and on some occasions spawning.
