Abstract
Although over 80 per cent of Irish salmon are caught in coastal waters, salmon is not treated statistically as a sea fish. Salmon accounts for about 10 per cent of the total value of fish landed at Irish ports and ranks in this respect after mackerel, herring, cod and crustaceans. Tonne for tonne, however, salmon has been by far the most valuable fish caught in Irish waters, followed by sole, turbot and brill.
