Abstract
Microwave and radiofrequency spectroscopy measure directly relatively small energy separations, between about 10 cm-1 and a few thousandths cm-1, or 300 GHz to 30 MHz. The short wavelength end of this range (1 mm < λ < 10 cm, say) comprises pure rotational transitions of molecules, Zeeman and Stark splittings, and the hyperfine structure of heavy atoms. Towards longer wavelengths (lower frequencies) one can measure the hyperfine structure of light atoms, the fine structure of hydrogen-like ions and Zeeman splitting from the nuclear magnetic moment.
