Abstract
Magnesium is the sixth most abundant metal in the earth’s crust. It is found both as an oxide in mineral deposits and in salt water as MgCl2, in concentrations up to almost 0.13 percent. The oceans and brine deposits of the world represent an essentially infinite reservoir of magnesium; each cubic kilometer of sea water contains in excess of 1.3 million metric tons of magnesium. Additionally, magnesium is present in the common minerals magnesite and dolomite, at concentrations of 29 and 13 percent, respectively.
