Computer modelling of seismic facies: implications for seismic and sequence stratigraphy

Correlation in Hydrocarbon Exploration

Abstract

Computer modelling of seismie reflections is a useful aid in seismic facies analysis. However, if this modelling is carried out in the conventional way, even the simplest of realistic lithofacies models may impose too great a computational load. ‘Best case’ seismic modelling assumes that each reflection from within a lithofacies model can be correctly positioned in the subsurface and given its correct amplitude. This simpler approach enables upper bounds to be given for the lateral persistence of individual reflections produced by quite complex models.
