Calculation of X-Ray Elastic Constants of Aluminum Oxide Ceramics

  • Chapter
International Conference on Residual Stresses

Abstract

Residual stresses in ceramic materials can be experimentally determined by the application of the X-ray diffraction technique. For the calculation of stresses from the lattice strains measured, X-ray elastic constants (REC) have to be known. They are calculated from the single crystal data and compared with the experimental values. The calculations are done for the trigonal system of crystallization. The REC are calculated dependent on the orientation of the lattice planes. The results show that the elastic anisotropy of trigonal crystals influences the magnitude of the REC and can therefore lead to errors if the mechanical values for the bulk material are used for stress calculations.
