Non-Uniform Residual Stress Determination by a Laser Method

  • Chapter
International Conference on Residual Stresses

Abstract

A coherent optics method for residual stress measurement is applied to nonuniform residual stress fields. The accuracy of the method is initially demonstrated by investigating the residual stress distribution in a coldworked mild-steel bar for which a theoretical solution is available. This new method is then applied to the study of through-thickness residual stress gradients in a plate with a longitudinal weld bead.
