Abstract

This paper presents the development of a modified step-by-step hole-drilling method to measure the residual stress distribution in coating materials. A finite element procedure has been used to compute the calibration constants for the application of this method to multilayer materials. The first application of this method is the measurement of residual stress in a NiCrAlY plasma-sprayed coating. The effects of the plasma-spraying process (low-pressure plasma-spraying and air plasma-spraying) and post-heat treatment on the residual stress distribution were studied. The second example concerns the analysis of residual stress introduced during various finishing treatments (heat treatment, shot-peening, nickel plating) on steel with a stainless coating. This method can be applied to other materials with coatings thicker than 50 µm.
