Post-Sintering Hot Isostatic Pressing of Ceria-Doped Tetragonal Zirconia/Alumina Composites

  • Chapter
Zirconia’88

Abstract

Ceria-doped tetragonal zirconia/alumina composites (Ce-TZP/Al2O3) and yttria and ceria-doped teragonal zirconia/alumina composites ((Y,Ce)-TZP/Al2O3) were fabricated by sintering at 1450°C for 10 hr in air, followed by hot isostatic pressing (Postsintering HIPing) at 1450°C and 100 MPa for 1 hr in an 80 vol% Ar and 20 vol% O2 gas atmosphere. Dispersion of Al2O3 particles into TZP was useful in supressing the grain growth of zirconia and increasing the relative density of TZP prior to HIPing. Postsintering HIPing was useful to density Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites to almost fully theoretical density without grain- growth and to improve the fracture strength and thermal shock resistance.
