AC Impedance Complex Plane Studies on Alumina-Zirconia and Mullite-Zirconia Composites

  • Chapter
Zirconia’88

Abstract

Mullite-ZrO2 composites with 10, 20 and 40 vol.% of ZrO2 particles have been electrically characterized by AC impedance complex plane spectroscopy. The effect of the zirconia dispersed particles on the conductivity of mullite in the temperature range of 500-900°C has been determined. Within the temperature and frequency intervals considered only one perfect grain interior arc has been observed. On the other hand, two AI2O3-ZrO2 composites have been formulated keeping constant the proportion of ZrO2 vol%), but one of them with a small amount of TiO2 (0.5 vol%). The effects of TiO2 doping and annealing time on the impedance semicircle evolution have been investigated on these composites. Single phase AI2O3 and mullite samples have also been studied for comparative purposes. The impurity controlled conduction mechanisms are also discussed in the present work.
